How to wire a plug
![]() |
A common electrical fault can be simply caused by an ill fitted plug. If you take the cover off the plug it should look like that shown in the image although it may only have the brown and blue wires if the appliance is 'double insulated'. Older appliances may have the old wire colours of red and black where brown is the new red and blue is the new black. |
To fit a replacement or a new plug:
1. Ensure plug to be used is not cracked or damaged in any way and that the flex is sound and not damaged.
2. Carefully strip off 4cm of the outer cable.
3. Seperate out the wires and cut to individual lengths using the plug as a guide.
4. Remove 5mm of insulation from each wire being careful not to cut any idividual strands of wire.
5. Carefully unscrew each terminal and insert the correct wire into it ensuring all strands of wire are contained.
( Brown to live, blue to neutral and yellow/green to earth )
6. Tighten the clamp over the outer sleeve of the cable.
7. Ensure the correct fuse is inserted and all screws are tight.
- If in any doubt always seek the advice of a qualified electrcian.
